Clockwork Mouse for President
The grand finale that nearly didn't get finished
Clockwork Mouse for President was filmed from 21 to 23 August 2009 in the lounge of my Bristol flat, using a single cartridge of Wittner B&W54 Super 8 film and a 1977 Bolex 551XL camera. The film was conceived as the grand finale of the Clockwork Mouse series: longer, better and more sophisticated than any of my previous animations.
When I received the rushes from the lab, my first reaction was to send my camera off to Switzerland for repair. To be fair, the camera was only responsible for shifts in focus, excessive artefacts and the occasional flash frame; as for exposure, timing and framing errors, they were entirely my own fault. After giving it some consideration, I decided to abandon the project and to leave the film unfinished.
Several weeks later, I had another look at the material and discovered that there was just about enough useable footage to tell a shorter version of the story. And so the film went into post-production after all. It was completed on 14 November 2009.
The production stills below were taken with my 35mm SLR on Ilford Delta 400 Pro film. Click on any of the pictures for a larger version and a description.
